Match Report - 18 Sep 2022, Leeds Modernians Football Club Mods U15s lost to Methley United U15 Black

Mods kicked off the 2022/2023 with a disappointing narrow defeat away to a well drilled Methley Utd.

The game was preceded by an impeccably observed minutes silence in memory of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Despite Methley having joined the league via relegation the previous season, it was Mods who started the brighter of the two sides. After taking a foray into the summer transfer market, Hooley blooded two of his acquisitions into the starting 11 with Owen and Alfie pulling on the Mods shirt for the first of hopefully many times.

It was though Mods’ stalwart Freddie who provided the first piece of class with a lovely turn in the box only to see his finish end up in the side netting. Methley responded with a speculative long range effort that was efficiently dealt with by Oli. Mods whilst not creating a huge amount looked under no real threat as Alex and Owen sniffed out any potential danger. Mods were displaying the more attractive football especially down the flanks with some tidy inter play and with a touch more composure, there may well have been more to show for it.

Methley’s best chance came when a sliced clearance from Owen was magnificently saved low down to his right by Ollie, therefore saving Owen’s blushes. Shortly afterwards, Ollie was called into action again tipping over another Methley effort just after the half hour mark. Kieran had in the meantime glanced a header wide after a freekick was whipped in the from Mods’ right hand side.

There was little to choose between the two sides as the referee blew the whistle for half time.

Archie provided the first opportunity for Mods as the teams settled into the second half with Danny Haggis, George and Harry having made way for Daniel Hargrave, Zac and Sam. His free kick was skewed wide of the left hand post.

Methley then missed their first of several golden opportunities when their hapless striker took an ugly air shot with a gaping goal in front of him – some Bamford comparisons were audible amongst the relieved Mods’ parents. The let off lifted Mods who were showing signs of rustiness after an encouraging first half. Alfie threaded a lovely weighted ball into Freddie in the box and with his second choice boots, he smashed it unfortunately straight at the excellent Methley keeper.

Shortly after, some excellent play by the referee spared Ollie’s blushes after a spilled shot was tapped in. The arm went up and the goal chalked off. Daniel had a half chance at the far post after a corner had eluded the Mods’s strike force in the six yard box .

Then the hammer blow came in a game of fine margins where one goal always looked as if it was going to be decisive. A whipped in ball was struck home at the far post with the clock ticking down. Mods only tangible scoring opportunity then came as Alex struck a 35 yard howitzer free kick. Methley’s keeper rooted to his spot, gawped upwards as the ball smashed of the full face of the cross bar and away to safety. A few centimetres lower would surely have seen the equaliser go in. Mods valiantly tried to get the equaliser but the well marshalled and tight Methley defence provided resolute resistance.

Methley will be up there at the end of the season but there was plenty of encouragement to take from the game with the Methley coaching set up conceding Mods deserved to take something from the game.
