Getting to know – Chris Roy
1. Full Name - Christopher Scott Roy
1.2. AKA - Chris, Chrissy, Christophe, Christabel, Royo, Royie, Royston, Liz McDonald, You Old Get
2. Age - 45
3. Place of Birth - Jessops Hospital, Sheffield
4. Position - These days, left back. When I had pace (yes), left wing, left or central midfield.
5. Boots - Puma King (my 7th ‘last pair’).
6. Playing History – Owlerton Juniors (Sheffield), Scarborough Town U18 & Reserves, North Bank, Scarborians FC (yes that is a real name), Jefferson City (Leeds Sunday), Modernians since 1987.
7. Best Player/s you have played with – Non-Mod - Darren Wood (went on to play for Middlesbrough and Chelsea). Mods – Steve Pyle was (and probably still is) excellent, as was Steve Brown (part of the League winning team).
8. Best Player you have played against – A guy who played for Elland a few years ago (already mentioned by Smythey) who was outstanding. He’d knock a 40 yard ball to a teammate and then be 5 yards away from the same player ready to have the ball back. He battered us on his own.
9. Football Idol – Johan Cruyff. As a Sheffield Wednesday fan – Paolo Di Canio (before I discovered he was a fascist).
10. Favourite supporting football memory – Wednesday beating Sheffield United 4-0, Boxing Day 1979 in front of 49,000 people ( a record crowd for a Division 3 game). Mods – Marflitt Semi-final against Matthew Murray (I was injured), when they tried, but failed, to kick us off the park and we hammered them in extra time – brilliant !
11. Worst supporting football Memory – England v Germany World Cup semi-final 1990.
12. Greatest playing memory/achievement – Winning Senior A in 1991 and the Shield/Marflitt cup double in 2001 (and being voted man of the match by my teammates in both finals).
13. Worst Mods or previous club memory – Relegation from Senior A felt like a disaster at the time. Getting sent off in Marflitt Semi-final against the disgraceful Roundhegians.
14. Mods Hero – Mick Appleby.
15. Best ground you've played at – Whitby Town. More recently, Mods pitch is as good as anything.
16. Favourite Band - Impossible. Currently listening to Jeff Buckley, Talking Heads, Joan as Policewoman, Pulp and Elbow.
17. Pre-match preparation routine – Bananas, Jaffa Cakes and Ibuprofen. Rush around in a Mullin ‘headless chicken’ style.
18. What do you do on a Saturday when not playing football – Miss playing football. Do all the things that don’t get done because I’m playing football.
19. Best Friend/s at the club - Too many good people at the club to mention, but there is a special affinity with Ramsden, Smythe, Hoole, Birch and Mullin for reasons of age/experience.
20. If you could change 1 thing about the club what would it be – The Chairman ! Seriously though, the amount of positive change over the last year is incredible. I feel very proud to be a part of it and to be part of a club with so many quality people (I’m getting all emotional now).
