Match Report - 08 Oct 2011, Old Modernians Football Club Reserves beat Gildersome Spurs (Marflitt Trophy Round 1)

Mods produced 80 minutes of excellent football before almost throwing it all away in the last 8 minutes.

On arrival at Street Lane, the Mods players commented on the quality of the playing surface - it was possibly the best they had played on so far this season. There woud be no excuse for not trying to play football as often as possible.

Mods started brightly and should have been at least 1 up inside 10 minutes, Si Lewis hitting the post was the most clear-cut chance. Against the run of play Gildersome took the lead after a lucky ricochet fell to the Number 10 who then put the ball past Matty Lewis with the help of another lucky deflection.

The equaliser and second of Mods' goals came soon after, both from Si Lewis, to give a fair reflection of the balace of play at half-time. 2-1 up.

It was important that Mods didn't put in another display of 45-minutes good football followed by a sub-standard second half, as Gildersome were clearly a talented side. However, Mods started the second half like an express train with Adie Shaduwa and another 2 from Si Lewis making it 5-1 on the hour mark. Game over? Subs were made to ease the stress on some injuries and rest those who needed it.

Gildersome, however, were not going to roll over even 4 goals down with just 15 minutes left. A quick free kick from Adam Matthews was cut out by Gildersome and a fine through-ball was finished well to make it 5-2. Game still over...probably?

7 minutes left. After a flurry of unneccessary free kicks conceded in midfield, Gildersome were putting enourmous pressure on the Mods defence. Another converted chance. 5-3.

4 minutes left. Game over...surely? Mods could not keep the ball. Gildersome threw the kitchen sink. Another chance converted. 5-4.

1 minute left. Another free kick conceded, Pile driver from the left-footed midfielder is spilt by Matty Lewis, ref orders a retake for encroachment by the wall and we get away with it. Lucky.

Final whistle. Mods players breathed a sigh of relief that they were not on the recieving end of a monumental comeback.

Mods had produced 80 of their best minutes of the season, but will have learnt that any lapse in concentration will be punished at this higher standard.
