Match Report - 26 Nov 2011, Old Modernians Football Club 4ths lost to Leeds City OB III

In 1037 games of open age football, I've never been involved in a team that played so well in a 5-2 defeat. Leeds City are a very, very good team, all young, fit and skilful and every player is completely comfortable on the ball (how on earth can they be in the same league as Batley and Collegians?).

In the first half we struggled to contain them, but looked menacing when we attacked, and it was no great surprise that we managed to draw level at 1-1 and 2-2. However, our makeshift back line was always wobbly, and we gifted them a third, soon to be followed by one of the best goals I have seen scored in the YOBL.

4-2 down at half time, we changed to a 4.5.1 in the second half (a great idea that I was just about to suggest when Josh Smith suggested it) and we easily matched them for the next 45 mins. Mullin and Clapham should really have scored with gilt edged chances, and Matt Flint actually did, but the young (and otherwise very good) ref missed the fact it had gone over the line. A 5th goal at the end was merely a result of us 'pushing on'.

So a deeply disappointing result, but a performance that everyone can be really proud of. Not a day to have a debutant centre half in, or an outfield player in goal, but with a full squad next time we play them, and with ther same attitude and work rate, we'll win.

MOM Toddy, closely followed by the rest.

A few quotes from the half time team talk;

"Right, I think we need to nullify the threat of their centre midfield maestro, so we're putting Joe into midfield, and playing 3 in the centre" Mullin Manger

"I just said that" Josh Smith

"I didn't hear you"
